Types of BHRT Therapy for Women

Did you know there are 3 types of estrogen? The estrogen family of estrone, estradiol, and estriol are major workhorses in the female body. Estrogens maintain and support many global body systems, including:

  • Mood, stress level, energy level
  • Memory and concentration
  • Bone health & structure
  • Heart health
  • Sleep
  • Sexual arousal

This productive hormone is secreted freely in females for roughly 50 years, and then can suddenly declines with menopause. It’s no wonder that estrogen therapy is the most effective treatment for hot flashes and night sweats, and can also help with sleep disturbances, mood liability/depression, joint aches and pains, and vaginal dryness/painful intercourse in peri or post-menopausal women. We can compound custom doses in topical cream and orally- dissolving troches with bioidentical estrogen.

Progesterone is an often-forgotten female hormone that acts as an important counterbalance for estrogen. It’s naturally produced during a female’s reproductive years and functions to keep the uterus healthy. Later, when estrogen levels drop, progesterone can get out of balance, too.

Bioidentical progesterone is often prescribed with estrogen therapy in postmenopausal females to maintain uterus health and continue balancing estrogen. We can compound oral capsules (which may help more with sleep disturbances), topical creams, or orally-disintegrating troches.

Progesterone is mass-made in commercial products as “progestins”. These are synthetic hormones – not bioidentical – that are not molecularly identical to our body’s own progesterone. Some studies suggest that progestins have more health risks – including an increase risk of breast cancer – than natural progesterone. We only use a bioidentical (natural) progesterone with the best safety profile. Our progesterone is also “micronized’, meaning it has a small particle size for well-mixed and potentially better-absorbed compounds.

Considered the “male hormone”, testosterone is produced and used by both sexes. In menopausal women, topical testosterone may increase libido, improve mood and energy, boost memory, support skin elasticity, help maintain muscle mass, and encourage a healthy immune system. We can compound topical creams or flavored troches.

Although helpful for many, HRT therapy is not for everyone and carries some risks. Our compounding pharmacists will work closely with you and your doctor to make sure we meet your unique healthcare needs. Reach out today for a consultation.
